This leader leverages competitive market intelligence to develop assortment strategies and plans for all brands and product categories, in collaboration with Merchandising, to deliver sales, margin and brand goals; guides initial concept development with Design and ensures integrity of brand strategy and line plan execution; works with Operations and Design to ensure assortments meet margin requirements and have operational support. The Director of Product Strategy collaborates with cross-functional leaders in Merchandising, Marketing, Retail, Digital Retail and Public Affairs to ensure cohesive, highly effective presentation of product and brand stories through marketing activities, visual merchandising and product training.
  • With General Manager of Co-op brands establishes and executes multi-year brand and product strategies to drive Co-op brands growth and profitability; influences and assimilates key constituents’ (Merchandising, Marketing, Retail, Digital Retail and Public Affairs) strategic plans and priorities to drive alignment and results.
  • In collaboration with Merchandising, leverages competitive market intelligence to develop and execute assortment strategies and plans for assigned brands and product categories; ensures cohesiveness across categories and effective lifecycle management; ensures assortments meet margin requirements; guides concept development with Design and ensure the integrity of brand plan and line plan execution; manages lifecycle management.
  • Develops deep market knowledge (competitive set, industry, product, etc.) to identify and exploit trends.
  • Drives product process from ideation to delivery across the product creation team; creates and ensures timely execution of product development calendars across functions.
  • Collaborates with Design, Merchandising, Marketing, Retail and Digital to ensure cohesive, highly effective presentation of product and brand stories; works to strengthen retail staff’s brand/product knowledge and advocacy.
  • Establishes a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Collaborates with Ops and sourcing to create product support plans

Bring your passion and expertise

  • 10+ years of professional experience in merchandising/wholesale and product management roles with a proven track record of success building gear brands; broad industry and global market knowledge. Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in a go-to-market-driven environment, and leading brand and product strategies from concept to market on a global scale.
  • Proven experience and financial acumen in forecasting, sales planning, margin/profit achievement, budget management and building durable business plans.
  • Experience and deep understanding of gear design, merchandising, product development, assortment planning, manufacturing, global supply chain operations, and retail distribution channels.
  • Strong collaboration, communication and presentation skills to effectively drive vision and strategy; builds constructive organizational relationships.
  • Extensive direct or collaborative experience and knowledge of marketing, communication and sales channel tools and messaging to drive brand awareness, sales, and profitability.
  • Strong brand and product acumen, aesthetic and passion, including exceptional trend-spotting skills; proven track record of insightfully translating target customer, competitive environment and market trends into business success.

REI Hires Chris Speyer To Run Private Brand

\"\"Kent, Washington based outdoor retailer REI has hired Chris Speyer, managing director of cycling and fitness company Accell North America, as vice president of private brands. He will take on his new role beginning October 30th. Speyer will oversee all private label development for REI.

Speyer managed ski and bike purchasing for the Forzani Group for 10 years and then worked at Worldwide Cycle.

Speyer began his career in 2006 with Raleigh America and played an active role in the May 2012 sales of Raleigh America to Accell Group as well as SBS\’s sale to Hawley-Lambert North America in March 2016. He held various roles including VP of marketing and product for Raleigh, COO and CEO of Accell North America and most recently managing director. Accell North America is the parent company of Raleigh, Diamondback and Redline.

The Director of Product Development for REI Private Brands contributes to REI’s success by performing as a functional and key member of the Private Brand leadership team.  The Director of Product Development oversees apparel, gear, outsourced product including leadership, strategic direction setting and execution of all development activity from sketch through to production approval.  This role successfully leads the development, engineering, predictive costing, patternmaking, fit execution and accurate specifications for creation of innovative, technologically advanced products at the highest level.

Your Responsibilities:

  • This role sets direction at a macro/strategic level as well as the tactical execution of the product creation cycle to reliably develop product to design intent, quality, margin and timeline expectations; collaborating across leaders in partner departments with a multi-season time horizon viewpoint.
  • Partners and collaborates with cross functional leaders design, quality, sourcing, pre-costing, patternmaking, production planning, merchandising, manufacturing and merch planning to achieve max efficiencies in margin, calendar adherence, quality, and delivery.
  • Successfully incorporate industry best practices/opportunities.   Focused on continuous improvement to fuel the level of operating sophistication of the product organization through processes, tools, systems and training that optimize impact, strengthen the expertise, and minimize not value add activities.
  • Establish a new pre-costing function (processes, tools, change mgmt) to support predictability in achieving margin targets while optimizing the value add within the product.    Educating the organization on the global economic drivers which affect product costing and margin for the Co-op.
  • Prepare and manage operating budget for the department.
  • Ensures compliance to seasonal timeline milestones, recommends changes for milestones as needed
  • Ensures department level deliverables align with Product Integrity strategy, collaborates with cross functional Product Integrity support team
  • Work with Design to proactively manage the styling, material and trim requirements relative to manufacturability, performance, quality, cost, lead-times and minimums.
  • Develop, implement and monitor all product development programs including but not limited to product and raw material commercialization, fit, calendar and color.
  • Oversee the garment fit process assuring fit direction is appropriate/consistent with the design intent, and maintained through product development into commercialization.
  • Maintain cost and master bill of materials during development process.
  • Facilitate cost engineering to meet cost goals, including maximizing construction opportunities while minimizing liabilities. Identify where costing objectives are out of sync with manufacturing or supplier trends.
  • Ensure the delivery and evaluation of quality lab dips/print strike-offs and communicate comments to vendor.
  • Create and maintain dash boarding of product development metrics for corporate transparency and executive review.
  • Review and continuously update standard operating procedures in partnership with team for best departmental efficiencies and practices
  • Ensure continuous product and process improvement with emphasis on quality product development and completion of products in accordance with the operating calendar
  • Responsible for the ‘total’ development process within apparel performance in both HQ and field offices through to ‘product sealing ‘stage and timely handover for bulk commercialization.
  • Monitor and continuously improves workload and organizational efficiency with the support of IT-systems, data and analysis
  • Take a leading role in the pre-allocation of all development projects within apparel performance based on service and product needs

Bring your passion and expertise

  • 10+ years product development experience
  • 8+ years leadership experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferable in design, engineering, or manufacturing
  • Strong knowledge of product development processes including design, costing, manufacturing and sourcing, preferably with Asian based production and cut/sewn category
  • Strong project planning and management skills, ability to develop and manage multiple timelines and deadlines
  • Experience with Product Data Management systems (ie. Enovia Matrix One) preferred
  • Ability to develop team capacity in organization, efficiency, attention to detail
  • Ability work effectively cross functionally with department leaders to develop and tune shared business processes preferred

Your Planning & Navigating Requirements

  • Manages deadlines and project details through regular and ongoing communication with Creative Director

  • Present packaging project concepts/direction to immediate team, Product Managers, and Merchants to gain creative direction alignment.
  • Knowledgeable and experience in leading the complete package design development process from concept and exploration through execution: including knowledge in the development of dielines, prepress, print production and ability to lead pre-production processes.
  • Ability to develop and conform to internal brand standards and guidelines that will strengthen brands, and ensure brand consistency.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience in a packaging engineering/design field
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Must have a refined ability to collaborate across all divisional partners, and to broker compromise and consensus without sacrificing the quality of the solution.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in creating communications through all avenues of print execution, from multi-page formats to packaging
  • Proven ability to provide superior design and engineering for product packaging on time and within budget
  • Experience with dynamic automated workflows, variable printing and emerging technologies
  • Advanced skills in current Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Working knowledge of CAD or graphics design programs

Qualifications

  • 6+ years experience in the design research or related field
  • Ability to support and co-create research plans that support design teams across Private Brands.
  • A understanding of good design and basic understanding of the product development process.
  • Ability to visualize insights (illustrations, storyboarding, video, collages etc.)
  • Ability to efficiently synthesize and communicate complex information to teams i.e., strong interpretive, verbal, written, and story-telling techniques to communicate consumer insights and needs.
  • Ability to advocate for the consumer throughout the design process
  • Ability to work across all design teams seamlessly, people orientated, passionate, enthusiastic, insightful, intelligent, committed, positive, engaged.
