H-E-B to Feed Texas Hospital Workers 75,000+ Free Private Brand Meals

Continuing the charge of Texans helping Texans, grocer H-E-B will deliver 75,000 fresh chef-inspired private brand meals to hospitals across Texas to feed our healthcare workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 crisis.

Each week for the next five weeks, H-E-B will deliver Meal Simple meals to doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers engaged directly with COVID-19 patients as well as those working in emergency rooms. The microwaveable meals are ready to eat in under two minutes, making them an easy, convenient solution for busy healthcare workers on the frontlines.

“We’re all extremely grateful for the dedication of our healthcare workers who are saving lives and making personal sacrifices for others,” said Winell Herron, H-E-B Group Vice President of Public Affairs, Diversity and Environmental Affairs. “We want to express some well-deserved appreciation and hope these meals will provide a bit of comfort during these trying times.”

This meal donation, which is worth more than $350,000, comes on the heels of H-E-B’s $3 million commitment to help local nonprofits that are providing relief to some of our most vulnerable neighbors: seniors, children and low-income families. Keeping with its Spirit of Giving and Helping Here philosophies, H-E-B, along with Central Market, Joe V’s Smart Shop and Mi Tienda, are dedicated to supporting communities throughout Texas, especially during times of need.

As part of this charitable investment, H-E-B has donated:

  • More than $1.2 million and nearly 40 truckloads of food and household supplies to food banks, which will provide more than 6.5 million meals for Texans;
  • $1 million to support grass-roots nonprofits;
  • $500,000 to organizations dedicated to mobilized home feeding services for seniors and low-income families, such as Meals on Wheels; and
  • $300,000 to assist Texas Biomedical Research Institute, a San Antonio-based organization with a team dedicated to coronavirus research.

H-E-B also is running the Texans Helping Texans checkstand donation campaign in all its stores across the state, giving customers the opportunity to support several organizations providing essential services, such as United Way, Meals on Wheels and Feeding Texas.

A Love Letter to H-E-B Flour Tortilla\’s

Last week Bon Appetite featured an article by Senior Staff writer Alex Beggs, “Why Are H-E-B’s Flour Tortillas So Dang Good?” The post a love letter to H-E-B’s instore made private brand tortillas is evidence that private brand has the ability to move beyond price and value to love.

Beggs has a history of writing about her love of private brand with an ongoing series of reviews of Trader Joe\’s private brand products.

Why Are H-E-B’s Flour Tortillas So Dang Good?

Texans know: These chewy, buttery beauties are a state treasure. But where did they come from?

Like you, the H-E-B flour tortilla has accepted the fact that it is imperfect. It’s okay with that. That’s part of the reason everyone loves it so much. Its little quirks. Like the lumpy, bumpy, not-quite-circular shape. Some air bubbles here and there. An edge that’s folded over a bit, like a teenage ear awaiting a piercing. These are signs that the precious H-E-B tortilla is homemade. Or as close to homemade as you can get in a 68,000-square-foot grocery store along the Houston interstate.

My half-Mexican, very Tex-Mex mom used to make flour tortillas with an electric press. She’d roll balls of dough made with flour, salt, baking powder, warm water, and Crisco and let them proof into silky balloons under a towel. Then she’d set up an assembly line where my siblings and I would stand to the side while she pressed out the tortilla and then passed it to us. Well, it would have been an assembly line if we’d put them in the kitchen towel instead of eating them one by one. Sometimes we’d slather them with butter and chew them in front of the TV, not knowing how this stupid greasy moment would be one of life’s best.

H-E-B Sues Home Depot Over Private Brand Coolers

Texas grocer H-E-B has filed a lawsuit against Home Depot and other companies alleging that they have infringed on patents for their Kodi private brand cooler. H-E-B filed its lawsuit Friday in federal court in Waco, Texas.

First reported by the San Antonio Express-News, H-E-B is asking the court to recall the infringing coolers and order the destruction of all coolers, plates, and molds used to manufacture them.

“At H-E-B, we invest heavily in innovation across our company to provide our customers the best quality products and customer experience available,” spokeswoman Dya Campos told the Express-News. “As a result, we cannot be idle spectators while others use without permission the intellectual property H-E-B and its partners have worked so hard to develop. While we would prefer to not go to court, H-E-B will vigorously fight to protect our investments and brand.\”
