The Role
As the Packaging Manager you will have authority to make impactful decisions that support the organization’s overall business strategy. In this fast paced and exciting area of our business, you will be given the responsibility to manage and develop the implementation of the organization’s packaging strategy for the entire product range, within the framework of an existing overall brand strategy. You will direct the efforts of the packaging design team and coordinate at both a strategic and tactical level with other functions of the organization to create effective and consistent ranges, with due regard to overall brand strategy, the latest trends and developments in the market, and legal and labeling requirements, amongst other factors. Responsibilities include managing all aspects of label and packaging development and design, through close communication with the Purchasing team, design agencies, regulatory bodies and relevant internal and external advisory sources.

  • Defining and overseeing the implementation of all elements of the packaging strategy – including definition of ranges and project management of range design, label and packaging development for the entire range of private label products
  • Managing and developing internal style guides as well as labelling and packaging guidelines
  • Consulting with the Quality Assurance department, internal legal advisory departments and external agencies for full legal compliance of the packaging
  • Liaising with suppliers, in conjunction with the Purchasing department where necessary, throughout the whole development process from product proposal to completed design
  • Undertaking continuous analysis of the competitive environment, with regards to both packaging trends and consumer trends, and communicating them in a clear and concise way to other departments within the company
  • Negotiating and securing contracts for design services
  • Liaising between product suppliers, packaging suppliers, design agencies, regulatory bodies, and relevant internal departments; in particular working closely with the Purchasing and Marketing departments, enabling them to achieve their aims by providing them with best-in-class packaging development and design services
  • Planning and budgeting
  • Guiding the day-to-day activities of the Packaging Design team, in the context of overall long-term planning
  • Managing the long term development of the packaging team, with provision for succession, and maintaining a climate that attracts, retains and motivates top-quality packaging design professionals
  • Engaging and encouraging the team, providing direction and resources – coaching them to success, while transmitting to them the company’s overall values, vision and direction

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in(Design, Product Development, Marketing, Retail, Business, Supply-Chain or related field
  • 3+ years of relevant project management / team management experience in the area of packaging management, ideally within one of the following sectors: grocery retail / general retail / consumer goods marketing
  • Passionate about all aspects of product design and packaging development, with an ability to show in-depth understanding of the development of successful and sustainable product brands in the US
  • Understanding of and familiarity with the grocery and consumer goods sector
  • Flair for negotiating, persuading and networking
  • Ability to manage people, with an understanding of how to motivate for results
  • Strong commercial ability with entrepreneurial talent
  • Proficient with all standard office software and design programs

Preferred

  • Fluent speaking/writing in German a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to make important decisions and cope with the pressure of demanding situations and tight deadlines
  • Ability to adapt to different client needs and to develop and maintain successful working relationships

Overview:

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the internal and external audit program, which includes focus on cGMP compliance, regulatory agency inspection readiness and for-cause inspections
  • Oversees manufacturing inspection and release
  • Recommends systems for audit and assists with audit plans, scheduling, manages and assists with audit reports, close audits. Follow up on corrective actions
  • Ensures proper coordination of strategic business partner audits; mock regulatory inspections, and manages regulatory facility inspections
  • Oversees on-site microbial and analytical laboratory
  • Oversees documentation, reporting and closure of compliance issues
  • Conducts trend analysis of audit results, investigations, corrective action; provides management with root cause analysis in annual quality system performance report
  • Reviews GMP quality metrics; analyzes data relating to manufacturing process controls, and continuous process improvement efforts; coordinates the necessary quality adjustments
  • Reviews relevant GMP documents for compliance to company SOPs, quality systems, and regulatory requirements
  • Oversees the following investigations: nonconforming product, customer complaint, laboratory OOS and CAPA. Ensures all investigations are performed and closed in timely fashion
  • Strategizes and resolves concerns with customers and vendors on quality related matters
  • Provides guidance, interpretation, support, training and input on regulations, guidelines, company policies and procedures
  • Prepares and conducts Quality Management Review meetings
  • Directs annual product quality reviews
  • Advises management on external compliance trends impacting company business
  • Manages GMP training initiatives
  • Manages quality inspection teams at multiple distribution centers
  • Understands financials and is able to prepare financial reports for accountable areas.

Qualifications:
Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor or Master of Science degree in a related scientific discipline, Master’s and/or PHD preferred

Required Knowledge:

  • Extensive working knowledge of GMP regulations and regulatory compliance inspections
  • Strong knowledge and experience with 21 CFR 110 and 111 or 21 CFR 210 and 211 as well as international regulations

Experience Required:

  • Minimum 10 years of Quality experience in the dietary supplement or pharmaceutical industry
  • At least 5 years of management experience

Skill and Ability:

  • Ability to apply principles of logical and scientific thinking to a wide range of practical problems
  • Ability to effectively lead teams and manage staff

Job Summary
Directs the development and implementation of store merchandising strategies and techniques to establish a relationship with the consumer and continually enhance advertising and promotional space of assigned merchandise categories. Creates and executes short-term and long-term strategies that align with the Company brand, merchandising categories, key customers, and company financial goals, while managing vendor relationships and new product launches.

Responsible for directing, coordinating, and assuring assigned retail merchandise categories are purchased at the lowest possible cost. Assures purchases are made with a thorough analysis of general business economics and conditions, sources of supply, merchandise requirements, and overall Company policy.

Provides continuous leadership, oversight of work quality and constructive feedback to direct reports.

Job Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops and implements business and marketing plans and budgets, including long-range objectives, performance goals and metrics for each category. Champions cross-functional merchandise opportunities. Understands store merchandising principles and the analytics of customer purchase behavior. Works across multiple departments to ensure the categories are properly assorted and represented in various store formats and store profiles. Review store plans for prototype and flagship stores to assure category adjacency and footage is appropriate.
  • Provides continuous leadership, oversight of work quality and constructive feedback to direct reports. Communicates Company, department and individual performance goals and levels of goal achievement. Recruits, hires and trains a qualified and talented team of employees.
  • Supervises and guides the planning process with Category Managers in developing and recommending pricing, promotions and assortment for the stores, to include, item selection specifications, distribution methods, packaging concepts for products produced by outside manufacturers, and the implementation of incentive, marketing, buy-in, discontinued/carry-over product and direct import programs. Applies complex analytics to optimize store assortments, promotions and pricing. Works with Category Managers and promotions teams to develop the long term promotional strategy for each category and oversees the plan for a staged approach to achieving new strategy while growing sales and margin.
  • Creates collaborative business plans with strategic vendors and negotiates marketing strategies and programs. Ensures Category Managers develop and maintain positive vendor relationships. Approves Category Manager vendor contract negotiations, guaranteeing the attainment of the most advantageous pricing, terms, discounts, allowances, quality, delivery, service, and dating. Ensures all merchandise meets established standards, and consumer and customer complaints, requests, and questions are resolved within guidelines.
  • Assures proper analysis and application of internal and external market research information, including IRI data to determine Company direction in designated categories, reasons for share increases/decreases, and plans to grow designated categories. Identifies emerging trends in the marketplace and works with store concepts to develop new and innovative merchandising techniques, fixtures and technology pilots to create the future vision for the categories.
  • May approve, expedite, withhold or negotiate vendor payments. Assists the Accounting Department in resolving payment/dating issues, pricing discrepancies, audit issues, and past due monies. Performs accounting review.
  • Manages the development of procedures to ensure merchandise is available to consumers at the start of marketing events and maintained at sufficient inventory levels to support all events.
  • Develops business cases to secure capital when needed to support departmental initiatives including a full ROI/payback analysis. Assures the appropriate use of Corporate capital; verifies item exit strategies are in place.
  • Guides the strategic direction of private brand in their categories. Manages and approves the development of Walgreen’s private label products within assigned departments. Reviews and approves projected sales forecasts and gross profit level and the merchandising and promotional programs.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and at least 7 years of experience in retail OR a High School Diploma/GED and at least 10 years of experience in retail.
  • At least 2 years of experience creating merchandising plans for categories, to include, experience with customer analysis, market potential evaluation, and goal definition.
  • At least 2 years of experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams and managing staff, to include creating development plans, managing performance and selecting/recruiting.
  • At least 2 years of experience working with P&L concepts – revenue, cogs, gross profit margin, operating expenses and income
  • At least 2 years of experience managing vendor relationships and negotiations, to include identifying problems and recommending solutions.
  • Experience with conducting and guiding analysis for market potential evaluation, pricing and promotions.
  • Knowledge of marketing and promotional strategies and methods.
  • Intermediate level skill in Microsoft Excel (for example: using SUM function, setting borders, setting column width, inserting charts, using text wrap, sorting, setting headers and footers and/or print scaling).
  • Experience coordinating and facilitating executive management meetings.
