Registration Opens For 2012 The Dieline Package Awards

\"\"This week package design blog The Dieline announced the official start of the 3rd Annual The Dieline Package Design Awards, 38 winners across 12 different categories will be awarded a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place Dieline Award, and the highest scoring project will receive a one-of-a-kind “Best of Show” award. An “Editor\’s Choice” award will also be given out, handpicked by Andrew Gibbs, Editor-in-Chief of The Dieline.

Although the competition does not have Private Brand Exclusive categories Private Brands over the last few years Private brands have fared really well. Past retail winners have included: Fresh & Easy, Waitrose, Homebase and Amazon.

The Dieline Package Design Awards are judged by a highly esteemed panel of 10 industry experts, and awarded based on quality of Creativity, Marketability, and Innovation.

The judging panel includes:

Tesco Imports Private Brand Goodness from Fresh & Easy

Great Britain’s largest grocer and Private Brand trendsetter Tesco has turned to its US arm for inspiration and is launching a new Private Brand of healthy food – “Goodness”. Launched last year at its El Segundo, California-based Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market stores in the US, the home meal solutions and snacks have arrived in the UK as the retailer leverages a great idea from its struggling US banner.

The new Private Brand will go head to head with Asda’s Great Stuff Private Brand in the children’s food market. And rival Sainsbury’s is set to launch its Private Brand of food for kids under the Eric the Elephant label later this year as the supermarkets square up for another food fight.

Tesco is planning to launch more than 70 items in the Goodness line. First on the shelves are its Cottage Pie and Four Creamy Yogurts for £1. Additional items ranging from pasta and smoothies to cakes and raisins will begin to appear on shelves over the summer with the full range up and running by the end of the school holidays.

With all products tested by a panel of children and tastes adapted for English tastes, Tesco is confident it has a recipe for success.

If Tesco is able to utilize Fresh & Easy as a incubator and test market for Private Brand and retail innovation they have the potential of creating a competitive advantage that has value above and beyond the sales and margin of the stores. And ironically it puts a prominent English retailer looking back across the pond for innovation.

According to a post by the blog, “Fresh & Easy Buzz”:

“Bryan Roberts, director of retail insights for Kantar Retail EMEA in the UK, did a store check today for Fresh & Easy Buzz and his firm and spotted some of the bagged \”Tesco goodness for kids\” value-added produce items, which have replaced similar \”Disney\” brand items, in a Tesco store in London.

Additionally, look for Tesco to introduce other items in other categories, such as shelf-stable fruit drinks and various packaged food items, under the \”goodness for kids\” brand, which was created by the new product development and category management teams at Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market in Southern California.”

Walmarts Marketside Continues To Grow

\"\"This is my second post this week that owes its existence to one of my favorite blogs Fresh & Easy Buzz. Occasional the F&E Buzz strays from its focus on Tesco’s Fresh & Easy to other retailers, this week their gaze shifted to Walmart\’s premium fresh brand Marketside. The brand continues to evolve and grow giving Walmart shoppers a real reason beyond price to choose Walmart over the other guy.

Recently launched items include:

  • Marketside Mushroom And Cheese Half-Moons and Grilled Chicken and Spinach Ravioli.
  • Marketside Chicken Tortilla Soup
  • Marketside Classic Smooth Guacamole. This SKU is a larger version (2/7oz Trays instead of pouches)
  • Marketside Artisan Petite Cranberry Walnut Loaf. This new specialty bread is one of a number of new varieties Walmart is launching to go with its existing \”Marketside\” bread, roll and baked goods lines.
  • Marketside Roasted Garlic Hummus. The variety is one flavor in the multi-SKU new line of \”Marketside\” packaged, fresh-refrigerated hummus.

2011 should be a big year for Walmart and their Private Brand Marketside with new launches expected in the first quarter.

Fresh & Easy Focuses on Niche Private Brand

The blog also has a regular feature known as the Private Brand Showcase, which I often reference. This weeks post details three new items, here is an excerpt.

New Items Show Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market\’s Niche-Specialty Category Private Brand Development Focus
Tesco\’s Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market has gone decidedly niche and specialty products-oriented with three new food and drink items it recently introduced, pegged to the November-December holiday season, under its fresh&easy private brand.

The three new fresh&easy brand products fall clearly into the specialty food and drink category because they are niche-oriented consumer packaged goods items and feature gourmet or organic product attributes, and in case of the coffee also offer a fair trade attribute, along with the organic.

Holiday Blend Coffee
The fresh&easy Holiday Blend coffee – a seasonal item introduced by the grocer for the November-December-New Year holiday period. The special blend coffee features both organic and fair-trade coffee beans.

Pumpkin Pecan Waffle & Pancake Mix
The recently introduced fresh&easy Pumpkin Pecan Waffle & Pancake Mix is designed to be merchandised in the store all year but has a clear fall and holiday season focus to it.

Cranberry Walnut Loaf
The new fresh&easy brand Cranberry Walnut Loaf specialty bread is made for Tesco\’s Fresh & Easy by its bread vendor Il Fornaio.
