H&M Wraps UP Private Brand.

Take a look at this new gift box design designed by Linn Gustafsson, Sweden for the kings of fast fashion H&M. Every time my wife and I go to New York we find ourselves in their store just off Herald Square loaded with bags of cool Private Brand clothing and accessories.

Interbrand & Business Week have once again published its list of Best Global Brands. It is easy to argue with these types of lists, armchair quarterbacking is a particularly entertaining past time. However I find that each one has some kernel of truth, and in this one it is easy to see the power of the global uber brands and a few global retailers who play heavily in Private Brands have scored well.
Private Brand Retailers of Note:
22. H&M
Unlike competitors such as the Gap, Swedish clothing store chain H&M said that it plans to create between 6,000 and 7,000 new jobs during the year by opening 225 new stores around the world. H&M continues to diversify with product mix, store expansion, and design. While CEO Rolf Eriksen’s summer 2009 retirement has sparked a potential succession issue, H&M’s continued focus on “nano fashion” (real time adaptability), price, CSR, and fashion designer collections have helped it grow.
28. IKEA
Despite tightening wallets, IKEA sales are up seven percent year on year. Now that more people are opting to spend more time at home, IKEA has taken a new lease on life. It also remains truly popular online. (IKEA websites are among the most visited, attracting around 450 million visits a day.) Customers still camp out before a new store opening. This year, IKEA continued to diversify and launched a pay-as- you-go mobile phone service in cooperation with T-Mobile that is 25 percent cheaper than similar pay-as-you-go offers.
50. Zara
Throughout the downturn, the Spanish clothing chain’s revenue has continued to increase. Unlike competitors, Zara does not have an issue with product life cycles, as it has an extremely efficient turnaround of new products. It is also getting a lot of credit from the market and analysts for its innovative logistics system, which allows it to get product from design to shelf months faster than competitors. The brand is gaining more of a leadership position right now, too, due to its low price for the latest trends perception. The enigma is that Zara is not a big advertising spender and instead builds awareness through word-of-mouth and retail presence.

Posted by: | CommentsYesterday afternoon a U.S. Air plane crashed into the Hudson River. The plane took off in New York and was bound for Charlotte. By now everyone has heard about this it is “the miracle on the Hudson,” so why talk about it in a Private Brand blog. Simple, my wife is a clothing buyer for a women’s clothing chain who was flying New York to Charlotte on US Air yesterday afternoon.
She is safe and sound and after a flurry of calls from and to family and friends, we are a little stunned and happy she made it home safe and sound yesterday evening.
She flies to New York every other month. She often comes home with presents and of all the little exciting things she finds; my young daughters love the little soaps from the hotels. This time she came home with toys, little soaps and a Private Brand sweater from one of our favorite retailers H&M. Walking in the H&M not far from Herald Square in New York City is truly a experience. They are all Private Brand and they are Private Brand to the core. With a large variety of Private Brands and a high profile collection of exclusive designer Private Brands they pull of discount retail with a funky fashionable European flair. The Swedish retailer has more than 1,600 stores in 34 countries. Some of their Private Brand highlights have included:
- November 2004: they featured an exclusive Private Brand collection by fashion designer/icon Karl Lagerfeld.
- November 2005: the chain launched a Stella McCartney
- November 2006, by avant-garde Dutch designers Viktor & Rolf.
- March 2007: a groundbreaking collection with Madonna
- June 2007: the company worked with game developers Maxis to create a stuff pack for the latter’s The Sims 2 computer game, H&M Fashion Stuff
- November 2007: the chain launched a collection by Italian designer Roberto Cavalli
- Also in 2007, another collection with pop star Kylie Minogue was launched in Shanghai, China
- In the fall of 2008 the Japanese company Comme Des Garçons was selected as guest designer
- For spring and summer 2009, the British designer Matthew Willamson has been invited to be the guest designer
