Family Dollar to Launch HBC Private Brand – Family Wellness

\"\"According to Family Dollar CEO Howard R. Levine speaking in the January 6th earnings call the Matthews, NC based dollar retailer plans to add 100 new Private Brand food products in the first quarter as a part of 300 new food items to be introduced in stores.

“Food continues to be a significant trip driver. Through our renovation initiative, we have significantly expanded our assortment of food. Last spring, we incorporated a number of these new items in existing stores that had not been renovated, and our customers have responded well,” Levine told analysts. “This quarter, we will add 300 new food items in all stores, including about 100 new private brand items. These additions will position us to capture more trips and reinforce our value proposition.”

Family Dollar will also launch the newest addition to its Private Brand Portfolio, the new health and beauty brand “Family Wellness” will continue to build on its established naming scheme: Family Gourmet, Family Chef, Family Dollar and now Family Wellness. “We will launch our Family Wellness brand to provide our customers with quality over-the-counter merchandise at great values,” Levine told analysts.

“Private brands and food will be an important part of our assortment, and I would add in the HBA areas, the new name, Family Wellness, you\’ll begin to see in our stores in the very near future,” Levine said. In response to a question on Private Brand penetration rates, he outlined, “at the end of last year, our total private brand penetration was about 25%. On consumables, it was about 16%. In the first quarter, we continued to see great growth in Private Brands. I think something like 16% or 17% growth in consumable private brands in the first quarter. So that trajectory is continuing. As I think we\’ve said on past calls, our goal is – our near-term goal is to get penetration of consumable private brands up to 20%, and we are certainly well on our way.”

Family Dollar Snags CVS Exec: Mike Bloom

\"\"Mike Bloom, executive vice president of merchandising and supply chain at Woonsocket, Rhode Island based drugstore CVS has left to become president and chief operating officer of Family Dollar.

Bloom succeeds R. James Kelly, who is retiring after 15 years with the company. Bloom’s appointment “reflects the result of several years of thoughtful discussion and planning as we prepared for Jim’s retirement,” said Family Dollar chairman and chief executive officer Howard Levine. “We are pursuing an ambitious growth agenda to expand our market share and drive greater financial returns, and these leadership changes ensure that we have a strong management team in place to execute our plans.”

Bloom began his 20-year career with CVS in store operations and progressed through a number of positions with increasing responsibility, including category manager, vice president of consumer health care and senior vice president of merchandising. Before joining the company he spent 10 years as a manager/executive with Virginia-based Peoples Drug Stores and the Florida division of Toronto-based Shoppers Drug Mart. He began his career at Woolco in 1979.

“A highly respected leader in the industry, Mike is a great addition to our team,” said Levine. “With more than 30 years of operational experience in small-box retailing, he is a seasoned merchant with a proven track record of leading high-performing teams and delivering results. In addition to being a strong leader, Mike is passionate about customers and driving their loyalty. In his new role Mike will have responsibility for major operational functions, including store operations, merchandising, marketing, global sourcing and supply chain.”

Bloom is credited with taking CVS/pharmacy’s business to new levels in both product innovation and sales. He demanded that the chain’s front-end categories — especially general merchandise segments— were imaginatively selected and that the entire mix was compellingly and creatively merchandised and promoted.

As a merchant, Bloom ramped up CVS’ Private Brands four years ahead of the recession, bringing new luster, sales and importance to the chain’s Private Brand offering. “I understand that our emphasis on private label isn’t always popular with the supplier community,” he said. “But it was the right move at the right time for our company — and, more importantly, for our customers.”

Bloom joins a very strong executive team that includes Dorlisa Flur who was also promoted to vice chair of strategy and chief administrative officer. She had been executive vice president and chief merchandising officer.
