The 2018 Vertex Awards Opens For Entries

The Sixth annual Vertex Awards, international private brand design competition, opens for entries today Friday, November 15, 2018.

“The Vertex Awards is the preeminent private brand package design competition. The competition proves that Private Brand has shifted from the ugly duckling to the global design leaders, innovator, and challengers,” said Christopher Durham, co-founder of the Vertex Awards and president of My Private Brand. “We’re proud to say that we have been instrumental in advancing private brands through the celebration of the best of the best each year.”

Over the past 6 years, the number of Vertex Awards participants has more than tripled. More than 200 retailers, agencies, and manufacturers from over 45 countries have entered the competition, with close to 1,200 separate entries. Past winners include Amazon, Walmart,, Tesco, Kroger, 7-Eleven, Aldi, Dairy Farm, Woolworths, Pingo Doce, Lidl, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Jumbo, Marks & Spencer, Target, The Home Depot, Carrefour, and Wegmans, to name a few.

Phillip Russo publisher of Global Retail Brands magazine and co-founder of the competition concurred. “At the end of the day, this competition is about turning private label design on its ear. Last year’s best of show winner raised the bar, showing the world fantastic and disruptive store brand packaging does exist. We’re excited to see what the competition brings this year.

This year the competition includes a number of exciting changes designed to improve and grow the awards.

  • A new handcrafted trophy created by the artisans at Cristaux.
  • 33 highly focused product categories. Projects may be submitted for consideration to multiple categories within The Vertex Awards.
  • A winner’s celebration and exhibit at Velocity: The My Private Brand Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, April 29 – May 1, 2019.
  • A winner’s celebration and exhibit at the Velocity Europe Conference in Lisbon Portugal, October 21-23, 2019.

The Vertex Awards is accepting entries until January 25, 2019. The Early Bird deadline ends December 10, 2018. The cost to enter is now $199 for Early Bird entries, $259 for Standard entries and $299 for Late entries.

Christopher Durham is the president of My Private Brand and the co-founder of The Vertex Awards. He is a strategist, author, consultant and retailer who built brands at Delhaize-owned Food Lion, and lead strategy and brand development for Lowe’s Home Improvement. He has consulted with retailers around the world on their private brand portfolios including: Family Dollar, Petco, Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, Metro (Canada), TLW (Taiwan) and Hola (Taiwan). Durham has published five definitive books on private brands, including his first book, Fifty2: The My Private Brand Project. In 2017, he will debut his newest book, Vanguard: Vintage Originals, a visual tour of innovation and disruption in private brand going back to the mid-1800’s. Dynamic in his presentation while down to earth and frank in his opinions, he has presented at numerous conferences, including FUSE, The Dieline Conference, Packaging that Sells, Omnishopper and PLMA’a annual trade show in Chicago.
