Family Dollar to Hold Open Buy Day

Family Dollar is seeking NEW suppliers to attend its Open Buy Day, during which it will review new potential branded and private brand suppliers. The Event is to be held at its Matthews, N.C.-headquarters Thursday, October 19 for Household Cleaning, Paper, GM and HBC and Thursday, October 26, for the Food, Beverage and Pet categories.

The Open Buy Day consists of two segments, including a nonfoods segment on 10/19/2017 overseen by Mike Mannion, Family Dollar’s SVP of Merchandising for Household Products and HBA, and a grocery segment on 10/26/2017 overseen by Mike Wilkins, SVP of Merchandising for Food/Beverages/Pet and Tobacco.

“We are interested in reviewing your best items that are innovative, unique, and can drive incremental sales with our value-minded customers,” said Mannion. “We are seeking to keep our shelf assortments, our off shelf promotional and seasonal programs fresh, relevant, and innovative.”

Wilkins added: “Expanding our vendor base to find relevant differentiated innovative items for our customers that grow sales is critical to the value we provide our customers.”

Family Dollar’s growth plans for 2017 and 2018 include opening hundreds of new stores and remodels to its current 8000+ store base to serve the consumer and grow sales for the company and its vendor partners.

Following are the breakdowns of the two Open Buy Day segments, and the categories for which Family Dollar is seeking new suppliers. Within these categories, Family Dollar is looking for POG items, in and out product opportunities, monthly and seasonal off shelf opportunities, end caps, power panels and clip strip programs.

Household Products and Health/Beauty Needs (Meetings will be held on Thursday, October 19):

  • Hair Care, Hair accessories, Beauty Care, Skin Care, Bath, Cosmetics, Fragrance
  • Multi-Cultural Hair Care, Multi-Cultural Beauty Care
  • Oral Care, Shave, Deodorant
  • Pain Relief, Cough & Cold Remedy, Allergy, Lip Care, Digestive Health, First Aid
  • Vitamin/Nutrition
  • Laundry, Household Cleaners, Paper Towels
  • Trash Bags, Semi-Durable and Disposable Food Storage, Plates, Cups, Napkins
  • Hardware, Automotive Supplies

Food/Beverage and Pet (Meetings will be held on Thursday, October 26):

  • Dry Grocery, Salty Snacks, Cookies/Crackers
  • Beverages
  • Candy
  • Dairy, Frozen Foods, Pkg. Deli
  • Pet Food, Treats and Accessories

ECRM will be organizing and managing the event, which will include upwards of 20 Family Dollar category managers

Christopher Durham

Christopher Durham is the president of My Private Brand and the co-founder of The Vertex Awards. He is a strategist, author, consultant and retailer who built brands at Delhaize-owned Food Lion, and lead strategy and brand development for Lowe’s Home Improvement. He has consulted with retailers around the world on their private brand portfolios including: Family Dollar, Petco, Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, Metro (Canada), TLW (Taiwan) and Hola (Taiwan).

Durham has published five definitive books on private brands, including his first book, Fifty2: The My Private Brand Project. In 2017, he will debut his newest book, Vanguard: Vintage Originals, a visual tour of innovation and disruption in private brand going back to the mid-1800’s.
Dynamic in his presentation while down to earth and frank in his opinions, he has presented at numerous conferences, including FUSE, The Dieline Conference, Packaging that Sells, Omnishopper and PLMA’a annual trade show in Chicago.

Durham lives in Charlotte, NC with his wife, Laraine, and two daughters, Olivia and Sarah.
