What is my job: 
Maintain Wegmans Brand (WB) private label products in the market at the highest quality standards, helping customers with health, help and value. This position partners with internal and external resources in a highly dynamic environment, following WB process discipline to ensure quality and safety.

How do I make a difference?

Ensuring High Quality Products & Ingredients

  • Support assigned Product Developers and/or Perishable Departments in product development process; notably with product cutting preparations and EDGE specifications
  • Ensure product specifications are in EDGE to allow projects to move to QA; this includes review and approval of supplier-entered specifications ensuring they are 100% complete and define the approved product formulations
  • Update EDGE specifications on assigned projects as they move through the WB and Supplier’s process steps in Marketing & Packaging
  • Provide technical formulation, sensory analysis, and comparative qualities during cuttings for input and approval (Merchant, Chefs, Executive Management, WB Management, Merchandising VPs, Product Developers); complete product testing and score-carding
  • Work with suppliers to complete product formulations that meet the assigned project goal, Wegmans’ development criteria and applicable regulatory standards with Product Developers
  • Communicate updates to suppliers and internal partners to ensure projects are moving through the product development process as planned, timelines are met or exceptions are communicated
  • Educate oneself and team members on assigned product categories to support Merchandising in  ensuring highest-quality product formulations from suppliers

  • Possess, and continually develop, subject matter expertise to facilitate development or improvement of Organic, FYFGA and “better, heathier, safer” products
  • Seek knowledge of industry trends, emerging issues, and regulations (USDA, Organic Certifications, etc.), as well as supplier capabilities related to manufacturing, capacity, quality performance, etc.
  • Present expertise and product knowledge to employees at all levels on proposed and existing WB products; maintain Wegmans culinary standards for all food presented
  • Develop a network of technical and culinary experts inside Wegmans, focused on sharing knowledge related to R&D and priorities in other manufacturing areas

  • Set and achieve goals for quality and speed to shelf; ensure all deadlines are achieved
  • Evaluate all reformulation requests (internal and external) to maintain highest quality standards, using culinary reference points as needed
  • Learn new tools (EDGE) to work collaboratively with suppliers, QA, project team
  • Maintain all records, formulations and related materials and share with other team members and provide information as requested
  • Listen and respond to process and product feedback from the organization

What skills, learnings, and experiences are required?

  • Bachelor’s degree in food science related field
  • 1 or more years of experience in food manufacturing/ development
  • Fundamental education in Food Processing
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Strong Systems Aptitude with the ability to learn and comprehend new systems quickly
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Possess strong listening skills and hear many points of view without bias, asking clarifying questions to check for understanding
  • Use available resources to pursue goals and challenges with the intent of achieving results, striving for continued excellence and taking appropriate risks (Managing the 5 Measures)

  • Drive knowledge based service by encouraging employees to learn about products and providing hands-on training that can be used to educate both customers and employees

What skills, learnings, and experiences are preferred and will set me apart?

  • Experience in Food Product Development and Manufacturing
  • Culinary Experience or related Associates Degree
  • Food Safety; General Quality Assurance knowledge
  • General Labeling and Specification Knowledge
  • Demonstrated experience handling multiple projects at one time

Work environment:

  • Work includes sitting, standing, walking and some carrying, repetitive hand and arm movements, frequent use of the computer and other office equipment along with interaction with co-workers in a fast-paced environment. The average weight range of items lifted is 1-10 pounds with a maximum weight lifted of 20 pounds occasionally. Work also includes travel to Wegmans stores and various supplier facilities, including international travel. When traveling, the work may involve prolonged walking and exposure to various work environments, including cold and freezing temperatures. May be exposed to various allergens (things that may cause an allergic reaction).
