Private Brands Sweep Australian Product of the Year Awards

015 Product of the Year 3MORE than 15,000 Australian shoppers have had their say in choosing the Australian 2015 Product of the Year.

Private Brand groceries from the large Australian chains featured heavily in the 6th outing for the awards.

The most hotly contested categories included fresh and ready-to-eat items, allergy-free products and body care.

The 44 winning products included Aldi banana bread and laundry soaker, Jamie Oliver’s soups for Woolworths, and Coles’ marinades with built-in brush.

015 Product of the Year 2The Nielsen survey reviewed new products against criteria such as performance, value for money and overall satisfaction.

The panel included NewsLocal editor-in-chief Kathy Lipari, Australian Food and Grocery Council chief executive Gary Dawson and Woman’s Day editor-in-chief Fiona Connolly.

Aldi won eight categories, followed by Woolworths with five.

015 Product of the Year 1Jamie Oliver’s soup range for Woolworths took out the award in the soups category.

“Supermarkets are responding to a real demand for really high-quality products that are affordable, particularly in cases of ALDI winning with eight products this year,” said Product of the Year Australia director Sarah Connelly.

Woolworths’ Macro and Select, Coles’ Finest and Aldi brands now appear in 98% of households.

Ms Connelly said people were more willing to try own brands “because the quality is starting to get a lot better”.

Christopher Durham

Christopher Durham is the president of My Private Brand and the co-founder of The Vertex Awards. He is a strategist, author, consultant and retailer who built brands at Delhaize-owned Food Lion, and lead strategy and brand development for Lowe’s Home Improvement. He has consulted with retailers around the world on their private brand portfolios including: Family Dollar, Petco, Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, Metro (Canada), TLW (Taiwan) and Hola (Taiwan).

Durham has published five definitive books on private brands, including his first book, Fifty2: The My Private Brand Project. In 2017, he will debut his newest book, Vanguard: Vintage Originals, a visual tour of innovation and disruption in private brand going back to the mid-1800’s.
Dynamic in his presentation while down to earth and frank in his opinions, he has presented at numerous conferences, including FUSE, The Dieline Conference, Packaging that Sells, Omnishopper and PLMA’a annual trade show in Chicago.

Durham lives in Charlotte, NC with his wife, Laraine, and two daughters, Olivia and Sarah.
