The Category Manager has full ownership of the entire product life-cycle from strategic activities to tactical implementation including idea generation; customer needs analysis; market segmentation; requirements gathering; business case development and analysis; pricing strategy; and operational planning. This person is responsible for driving both top and bottom line growth by identifying, developing, and managing a broad global supplier network that will increase profitability, customer and member loyalty, and the overall value proposition in the market place for all trading partners.

A successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of the market segment, seasonality, and global trends/events as well as have the ability to analyze and track sales performance by supplier, brand, category, and item, monitor key competitive, consumer, and corporate indices and recommend solutions to appropriate parties. They will have persisted in the face of competitive challenge and unforeseen obstacles. The candidate will also be responsible for establishing and maintaining professional relationships with suppliers and customers to create a strong foundation for ongoing business relationships. This individual must have a demonstrated ability to drive consensus across multiple stakeholders while never losing sight of the fact he or she is part of a larger team that must work together to effectively execute clearly defined goals using resources budgeted.

An ideal candidate will be self-starter, take ownership of their responsibilities and have working knowledge of the item development and lifecycle management processes. The candidate must have demonstrated success in applying time management skills such as prioritizing/organizing and tracking details and meeting deadlines of multiple projects with varying completion dates and managing multiple competing priorities. Thus this individual must possess high attention to detail and have strong excel and technical skills and understand syndicated data.

Federated Group, Inc. has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Account Executive (Sales) to join our on-site team at our customer’s headquarter offices located in the Hickory, NC. This role is a sales position and through a consultative selling approach a successful candidate will be responsible for working collaboratively with the customer to develop and execute strategic plans for private label growth as well as strengthen category position through increasing distribution of Private Label products. This person will have overall accountability for managing a small team to achieve established objectives and financial goals.

This individual will be accountable for understanding the unique requirements of the customer, work with the supplier community to develop appropriate private label solutions to support the growth the customers’ business, and continually sell the customer on the benefits of private label through demonstrating the competitive advantage of private brands. The will be responsible for the entire product life-cycle from strategic activities to tactical implementation including idea generation; customer needs analysis; market segmentation; requirements gathering; business case development and analysis; pricing strategy; and operational planning.

In addition, the candidate will have a work ethic that thrives on independent activity combined with a strong sense of urgency and efficient use of time. This individual must never lose sight of the fact he or she was part of a larger team that must work together to effectively execute the customer’s defined goals using the resources budgeted.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five years’ account sales experience coupled with management, ideally within a retail grocery trade business.
  • Knowledge of the wholesaler channels a plus.
  • Experience in creating annual objectives, business plans, and budgets.
  • Ability to conduct quarterly category and business reviews.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite with advanced level Excel skills and data analysis.
  • Must have the ability to travel, to include overnight.

Christopher Durham is the president of My Private Brand and the co-founder of The Vertex Awards. He is a strategist, author, consultant and retailer who built brands at Delhaize-owned Food Lion, and lead strategy and brand development for Lowe’s Home Improvement. He has consulted with retailers around the world on their private brand portfolios including: Family Dollar, Petco, Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, Metro (Canada), TLW (Taiwan) and Hola (Taiwan).

Durham has published five definitive books on private brands, including his first book, Fifty2: The My Private Brand Project. In 2017, he will debut his newest book, Vanguard: Vintage Originals, a visual tour of innovation and disruption in private brand going back to the mid-1800’s.
