Position Summary
The Senior Manager II, PD+MI is responsible advancing Merchandising category strategies at Walmart.com through product development and merchandise innovation opportunities that deliver financial impact to the business. This role is responsible for serving the Merchandising organization and bringing meaningful value to their category operating plans in order to deliver future growth.

Looking for a strategic problem solver who is creative and understand what levers to pull to yield results needed and is able to manage direct and indirect reports to achieve goals.

Position Description
MERCHANDISE INNOVATION DUTIES: (70%)
INVESTIGATE FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES: Identifies strategic white space opportunities to deliver new revenue streams to Merchandising through new products, tools and/or services. Extremely customer centric, research driven and analytical to leverage data and research both internal and external to make sound business recommendations that are P&L accretive. Must be able to know how to do research, mine data and apply strategic thinking to executive level pitches and presentations. Must have business acumen and financial savvy to work with analysts to turn insights into action. Must have strong presentation skills and executive presence. Ability to take strategic thinking and convey visually compelling and strategic VC level presentations pitches.

IDEATE + CONCEPT LAB: Visionary design thinker with leadership presence that can take a vision and bring it to life, garner support and influence others outside of their control and get buy in across key stakeholders. Creative problem solver that wants to disrupt new markets and invent new concepts that deliver value to the organization. Ability to work cross functionally internally and externally to facilitate design thinking work sessions, customer research, empathic customer journey mapping, rapid prototyping + lean start up approaches. Resourceful and able to leverage assets across the organization to build a strong proof of concept and prove it’s viability and take to the next level. Work knowledge of technology and ability to partner with technology leads and @Labs partners to develop digital products and launch on time while managing key business stakeholders.

IMPLEMENT + DELIVER RESULTS: Strong process and project manager who can envision the path to implementation, assign and manage a large cross functional team and hold people accountable to deliver results. A strong sense of ownership in holding teams accountable for their role. Ability to define success metrics and key performance indicators up front and measure and track results.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT DUTIES: (30%) ABOVE + BEYOND ASSORTMENT EXPANSION
Drives seasonal product assortments by incorporating trends in color, prints, patterns, and lifestyles; researching and forecasting macro and global trends relevant to advancing the Walmart.com business; overseeing the analysis of market validations; conducting in-store and competitive shopping and audits; creating and delivering visual and strategic presentations to convey key business opportunities and next steps in product development to internal and global partners; and collaborating with merchants to ensure trends are expressed on the site.

Manages financial scorecard for product development in relevant merchandising categories and departments by measuring and communicating financial performance of product development programs; and prioritizing product development.

Leads private label and non-branded product development process and strategies for merchandising categories and departments to extend assortment and drive profit by identifying current and future trends; developing strategies to maximize sales opportunity; collaborating with cross functional partners and external design partners to develop products; leading and managing integration process with enterprise or store product development counterparts; and providing design direction, review, and feedback.

Oversees the placement of unbranded and branded products by ensuring optimal product placement and cost; evaluating development samples to ensure design integrity and brand consistency; and supporting merchandising in product development and delivery.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Design, Business, Merchandising or related field and 10+ years working experience in product development, design strategy consulting, and/or entrepreneurship or related field.
  • 5 years of supervisory experience or experience leading project teams.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration
  • 2-3 years experience at top tier design and/or strategy consulting agencies

Christopher Durham

Christopher Durham is the president of My Private Brand and the co-founder of The Vertex Awards. He is a strategist, author, consultant and retailer who built brands at Delhaize-owned Food Lion, and lead strategy and brand development for Lowe’s Home Improvement. He has consulted with retailers around the world on their private brand portfolios including: Family Dollar, Petco, Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, Metro (Canada), TLW (Taiwan) and Hola (Taiwan).

Durham has published five definitive books on private brands, including his first book, Fifty2: The My Private Brand Project. In 2017, he will debut his newest book, Vanguard: Vintage Originals, a visual tour of innovation and disruption in private brand going back to the mid-1800’s.
Dynamic in his presentation while down to earth and frank in his opinions, he has presented at numerous conferences, including FUSE, The Dieline Conference, Packaging that Sells, Omnishopper and PLMA’a annual trade show in Chicago.

Durham lives in Charlotte, NC with his wife, Laraine, and two daughters, Olivia and Sarah.
