Job Description
Basic Function:
This is a position that supports the company’s strategic initiatives to grow private Brand. This individual will be a member of our World Class Design Team and assist in bringing creativity, unique, trend right product design to Michaels exclusive brand lines. The designer will report directly to a Design Manager. The Product Designer will play a key role within our integrated product development team. They will collaborate with the Design Manager, Private Brand Managers, Director of Private Brands and Global Sourcing and Category Directors or Category Managers.

Primary Responsibilities:

% of Time Major Activities
20% The Product Designer contributes to the Michaels’ value proposition by supporting merchandise initiatives through collaboration with our internal partners in Category Management, Private Brand and Global Sourcing as well as our vendor community. Product Designer builds relationships and drives communication to ensure product design requirements are developed, communicated and implemented.
20% Responsible for interpreting trend forecast provided by the Trend Committee and translating it into product design in their assigned categories. They also create storyboards and presentations in partnership with their Private Brand and Global Sourcing team members.
20% They will work with the Design Manager, Private Brand Manager, Director of Private Brand and Global Sourcing and Category Director to determine product specifications for concepts.
20% Coordinate and leverage the efforts of the internal design capabilities of our vendor partners with a focus on speed to market and driving a cohesive product statement at the store level.
20% Execute relevant design strategies by incorporating consumer insights, drive value engineering and improve products both in form and function with a sharp focus on achieving financial objectives.

Job Requirements
Skills Required:

Category Applicable Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
a.  Minimum level of formal education: Bachelors Degree in Design Related Field or a minimum 3+ years equivalent work experience required.
b. Area of study: Design major is preferred.
c. Special certification or technical skills: Illustrator and other CAD competencies.

Graphic, Multi-dimensional, or Industrial Design Skills (Product)

d. Minimum years experience required: 1 – 5+ years of experience in product design

Christopher Durham

Christopher Durham is the president of My Private Brand and the co-founder of The Vertex Awards. He is a strategist, author, consultant and retailer who built brands at Delhaize-owned Food Lion, and lead strategy and brand development for Lowe’s Home Improvement. He has consulted with retailers around the world on their private brand portfolios including: Family Dollar, Petco, Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, Metro (Canada), TLW (Taiwan) and Hola (Taiwan).

Durham has published five definitive books on private brands, including his first book, Fifty2: The My Private Brand Project. In 2017, he will debut his newest book, Vanguard: Vintage Originals, a visual tour of innovation and disruption in private brand going back to the mid-1800’s.
Dynamic in his presentation while down to earth and frank in his opinions, he has presented at numerous conferences, including FUSE, The Dieline Conference, Packaging that Sells, Omnishopper and PLMA’a annual trade show in Chicago.

Durham lives in Charlotte, NC with his wife, Laraine, and two daughters, Olivia and Sarah.
