PLMA’s Salute to Excellence Winners Announced

The Private Label Manufacturers Association(PLMA) announced that more than two dozen retail chains and wholesalers from across the country were selected as the winners of this year’s Salute to Excellence Awards. The awards give recognition for new Private Brand products that exemplify the high quality, innovation and value to consumers that continue to drive private label sales and market shares to record highs. The winners included:

Supermarkets, drug chains, mass merchandisers and wholesalers from all regions of the country submitted more than 400 individual product nominations. Products were then subjected to evaluations and judging over a two-day period by eight jury panels consisting of industry professionals as well as consumers. The criteria for the judging included product concept; product taste, texture & smell (for food items); packaging & presentation; and value for money.

Awards were given in thirty-four Food & Drink categories, including Asian foods; breads, rolls & muffins; breakfast cereals; breakfast foods; cakes & pies; candy; children’s foods; chocolates; condiments & toppings; cookies; dairy products; dressings, oils & marinades; hors d’oeuvres; hot beverages; ice cream & frozen novelties; infants & toddlers foods; juice & flavored drinks; main dishes; Mexican/Latin American foods; milk; natural foods & healthy eating; organic foods; pasta; pasta sauces; pizza; rice & grains; sides dishes; snacks/chips & crisps; snacks/nibbles & noshes; sodas & soft drinks; soups; spreads & dips; vegan & vegetarian; and yogurt.

Also receiving awards were products in eleven Home & Health categories: around the house; baby, bath & body, children’s; cosmetics & beauty care; home office; kitchen & cooking; laundry & cleaning, OTC & healthcare, personal care & toiletries, and pet products.

All of the winning products will be featured during PLMA’s 2012 Private Label Trade Show in Chicago with a special Salute to Excellence Awards showcase located within PLMA’s Idea Supermarket, and also promoted online following the show at

Christopher Durham
Christopher Durham is the president of My Private Brand and the co-founder of The Vertex Awards. He is a strategist, author, consultant and retailer who built brands at Delhaize-owned Food Lion, and lead strategy and brand development for Lowe’s Home Improvement. He has consulted with retailers around the world on their private brand portfolios including: Family Dollar, Petco, Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, Metro (Canada), TLW (Taiwan) and Hola (Taiwan). Durham has published five definitive books on private brands, including his first book, Fifty2: The My Private Brand Project. In 2017, he will debut his newest book, Vanguard: Vintage Originals, a visual tour of innovation and disruption in private brand going back to the mid-1800’s. Dynamic in his presentation while down to earth and frank in his opinions, he has presented at numerous conferences, including FUSE, The Dieline Conference, Packaging that Sells, Omnishopper and PLMA’a annual trade show in Chicago.
