Director, Own Brand and Business Development

Currently, Meijer is looking for a Director, Own Brand and Business Development.  Meijer is embarking on a transformation to increase innovation and insure a competitive advantage through Own Brand programs.  The Director of Own Brand and Business Development’s focus will be to influence that transformation by leveraging expertise in brand management, business, and product development, to define the Meijer Own Brand strategy in collaboration with Meijer Merchandising and Marketing.

The Director plays a principal role in leading the new Own Brand team as stewards of Meijer Brands, and in delivering against Own Brand enterprise strategies that result in growing market share, and driving both top and bottom line financial growth.

While final P&L resides with the Merchandising business owner, the Own Brand Director and Own Brand Team will have shadow P&L responsibility for the Meijer Own Brand business.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develops strong partnerships with merchandising business owners including Vice Presidents, Directors, and Buyers.
  • Identify and navigate feasibility of significant new business opportunities with cross – functional leadership from Meijer Merchandising, Merchandising Support, Manufacturing, Store Operations, Marketing, Procurement, and Finance.  Collaborate and influence overall business objectives with the development of core growth strategies.
  • Ensure alignment of Merchandising Support Own Brand Teams around core growth strategies.  Direct and lead the Own Brand Team’s development and execution of programs and initiatives that deliver against corporate strategies for short and long-term growth, and ensure continuity with brand, business, and product development initiatives.
  • Recruit, retain, and develop a high performing Own Brand Team that enables the organization to drive Meijer’s competitive advantages in the marketplace.  Train and coach the team to reach higher levels of performance and skill development.
  • Develop, mentor, and lead direct reports including Senior Brand Managers, Own Brand Leads, Associate Own Brand Leads, Culinary and Product Development Team Members, collectively responsible for creating brand and product strategies, developing a robust innovation pipeline that drives competitive advantages, as well as the day-to-day execution of Own Brand business activities, and product work.
  • Collaborates in a multifaceted, cross-functional environment to develop strategic supplier partnerships with the worldwide supplier community in conjunction with Merchandising, and Sourcing teams.
  • Support Merchandising in the Own Brand annual planning process, and ensure continued focus of Own Brand teams on delivering against financial, and Brand share objectives.
  • Collaborates with Marketing in support of developing Own Brand strategies and platforms for Meijer Brands, as well as consumer communications programs that increase Brand loyalty, consumer activation, and awareness around new products, programs, and customer solutions.
  • Responsible for developing Meijer Brand Strategies, conducting Brand analysis to better understand Consumer, and Business trends, conducting Consumer Research to improve our understanding of the Brand portfolio.  Develop strategic initiatives to drive Brand loyalty, expand Brand Platforms and Architecture.
  • Facilitate planning and execution for annual Own Brand Contests, Supplier Summits, Top to Tops, Innovation Summits, and both domestic, and international Trade events.
  • Accountable for overseeing proper operational management of Meijer resources and budgets.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred in business or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 – 15 years of experience in Brand Management, Business Development, and Product development and Innovation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication expertise and the ability to influence, and work cross – functionally in both leadership and mentor roles.

Christopher Durham is the president of My Private Brand and the co-founder of The Vertex Awards. He is a strategist, author, consultant and retailer who built brands at Delhaize-owned Food Lion, and lead strategy and brand development for Lowe’s Home Improvement. He has consulted with retailers around the world on their private brand portfolios including: Family Dollar, Petco, Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, Metro (Canada), TLW (Taiwan) and Hola (Taiwan).

Durham has published five definitive books on private brands, including his first book, Fifty2: The My Private Brand Project. In 2017, he will debut his newest book, Vanguard: Vintage Originals, a visual tour of innovation and disruption in private brand going back to the mid-1800’s.
