Position Summary:
This position is responsible for leading the Staples Brand Product Management team for Office Supplies and Facilities Products across our North American Staples business units. This role is accountable for setting the strategic direction and execution of a new product pipeline and delivering against sales and margin budgets. This role will work closely with our Merchant teams across our North American business units, as well as our Product Design and Development and Marketing teams to drive results. In addition, this role will also play a vital role in building, recruiting and developing talent in the Staples Brands Group.


Primary responsibilities:

Lead key Demand Generation activities to ensure strong sales of existing products and new launches

  • Develop selling strategies and execute all merchandising, promotional, and marketing tactics intended to deliver budgeted sales, sales growth, market share gain and margin in the Office Supplies and Facilities products categories
  • Work with cross functional team to execute elements of the cohesive marketing plan across multiple channels and vehicles
  • Drive sales in Contract and Delivery, and achieve Own Brand penetration and margin gains in the delivery channel
  • Oversee internal and external creative agencies to create key marketing materials, as well as category and product specific packaging briefs for promo and everyday products
  • Lead team to support Own Brand needs related to catalog and online presentation of Own Brand

Drive the Own Brand product management and new product creation process through compelling product roadmaps

  • Set the vision for new products and influence North American merchants to support the product creation process
  • Oversee the creation of rolling product roadmaps that differentiate Staples from competitors
  • Lead a team that collaborates with Product Development, Product Design and Business Development teams to execute new product development
  • Leverage product expertise to grow Staples’ Own Brand product dominance
  • Communicate category strategies and new product roadmaps to key Staples stakeholders

Foster team and individual excellence

  • Lead, coach and manage a team of high-performing Own Brand Product Managers and Developers
  • Focus on developing individual skills to enable superior results and strong relationships across the businesses in North America
  • Build a pipeline of future leaders with a passion for products

Lead customer centric research for future product creation

  • Partner with internal capabilities and external research firms to understand the voice of the customer for products
  • Partner with research resources to validate new product and package designs with customers
  • Manage resources that are focused on competitive threats and emerging market trends

Drive clear, consistent product branding and packaging strategy across Own Brand portfolio

  • Maintain Brand stewardship of all Staples brand and other exclusive brand products in our portfolio
  • Lead sub-brand development including name generation, trademark approval process, and logo generation
  • Develop and implement external brand / licensing strategies to deliver exclusive product branding solutions


  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum 10 years of Product Management / Brand Management and Marketing for leading consumer brands
  • Proven strategic planning and execution skills in a fast paced cross functional product environment

  • Strong leadership, influencing skills, and communication aptitude
  • Exhibits sound business judgment

Christopher Durham is the president of My Private Brand and the co-founder of The Vertex Awards. He is a strategist, author, consultant and retailer who built brands at Delhaize-owned Food Lion, and lead strategy and brand development for Lowe’s Home Improvement.
