The Director of Merchandising – Grocery is responsible for developing and managing the strategic product, placement, pricing and promotion of a Category. The Director of Merchandising – Grocery has the responsibility of the full sales, gross margin, and building market share within the Category Management Plan of assigned categories.

Essential Functions:

  • Has full P&L responsibility for assigned category
  • Develops annual category business plan
  • Develops and implements category strategic plans
  • Initiates and executes marketing plans for weekly and annual marketing programs.
  • Interacts with category teams and vendors to develop sales plans, programs and promotions that meet both organizations’ goals and objectives.
  • Establishes retail pricing guidelines, gross profit, sales objectives, and program and inventory turn objectives to maximize profit potential in conjunction with the Annual Operating Plan.
  • Sources innovative new products, ideas and promotions including the ability to get in / out of trends quickly. Develops own brand strategy in each category related to the primary competitor
  • Maintains competitive analysis
  • Optimizes SKU mix, sales and gross margin and the achievement of sales and gross margin budgets for the assigned category
  • Partners cross functionally to ensure results

Supervision Received:

Plans and carries out work assignments; resolves most conflicts which arise; coordinates work with others as necessary; interprets policy on own initiative in terms of established objectives. Keeps Teamleader informed of progress, potentially controversial matters, or far-reaching implications

Supervisory Duties:
Trains, assigns work to, and checks work of two (2) or more Team members; participates in the decision to hire, fire, and promote Team members; does not conduct the same work as Team members on a regular basis

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BSBA with a specialization in Marketing / Finance preferred
  • Minimum 6 years in an analytical, merchandising role with some management experience
  • Demonstrated working experience in marketing strategies, vendor and product negotiations, item and promotions

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent leadership, negotiating, and planning skills a must
  • Strong oral and written communication.
  • Financial acumen and analytical skills.
  • Solid influencing and negotiations skills.
  • Proven experience working across business units to leverage resources and capabilities to accomplish company goals.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Christopher Durham is the president of My Private Brand and the co-founder of The Vertex Awards. He is a strategist, author, consultant and retailer who built brands at Delhaize-owned Food Lion, and lead strategy and brand development for Lowe’s Home Improvement. He has consulted with retailers around the world on their private brand portfolios including: Family Dollar, Petco, Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, Metro (Canada), TLW (Taiwan) and Hola (Taiwan). Durham has published five definitive books on private brands, including his first book, Fifty2: The My Private Brand Project. In 2017, he will debut his newest book, Vanguard: Vintage Originals, a visual tour of innovation and disruption in private brand going back to the mid-1800’s.
