Our client is one of Australia’s largest retail organizations and has a powerful and rich history as a leader in Australian food and beverage retailing for over 90 years. The business continues to drive category innovation via a focus on Private and exclusive label brand strategy. An outstanding opportunity exists to join this unique group of retail leaders to develop and drive this high priority strategy further forward.

We are seeking an experienced Brand Development manager to drive profitable growth via effective research, selection, marketing and placement of Private and exclusive label brands.  Reporting to the General Manager and with one direct report, you will identify, create and manage Private and exclusive label brand programs for existing and proposed category portfolios. Working closely with both merchandise and marketing teams, you will have demonstrated success in developing brand architecture, a creative flair for packaging design and a sound commercial understanding of pricing and category management strategies. Specific accountabilities include design development and brand strategy, consumer communication and sales performance.

Critical to your success in this forward thinking retail environment, will be your ability to build strong, collaborative internal relationships with key stakeholders from both merchandise and marketing teams. You will engage supplier commitment to deliver on business objectives and adopt a creative, results oriented approach to problem solving. You will possess very strong influencing skills, work comfortably within a robust culture and possess the resilience, energy and passion to drive business wide support for the Private Label strategy.

To be considered for this role, you must have relevant tertiary qualifications or demonstrated, significant experience in a similar Private Brand development role. The ideal candidate will have sound negotiation skills, excellent communication and influencing abilities and experience working in a fast paced environment.

Christopher Durham is the president of My Private Brand and the co-founder of The Vertex Awards. He is a strategist, author, consultant and retailer who built brands at Delhaize-owned Food Lion, and lead strategy and brand development for Lowe’s Home Improvement. He has consulted with retailers around the world on their private brand portfolios including: Family Dollar, Petco, Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, Metro (Canada), TLW (Taiwan) and Hola (Taiwan).
