Introduction
Lead a high-performing brand and product management team for a global multi billion office products brand. Help set the strategic direction for Staples’ Own Brands in the Office Supplies space and create the vision for what our brand can be in key categories. Oversee the front-end of the product creation process. Identify and lead major innovation and brand exploration projects, leveraging both internal and external resources. Contribute to the global packaging strategy and ensures effective, consistent packaging execution in assigned categories. Lead customer research to ensure user needs are incorporated in category strategies and product attributes. Partner with peers across functional areas to achieve common goals

Primary Responsibilities
Drive global product portfolio, strategies and standards in Staples Office Supplies businesses:

  • Shape the product brand project portfolio for thousands of products
  • Establish and evolves product brand strategies for many diverse product categories
  • Articulate and maintain product/quality position of all Own Brand products
  • Identify levers to drive profitable growth in flat or declining businesses

Drive the Own Brand product management and new product creation process through compelling product roadmaps:

  • Set the vision for new products and influences the global Merchants to support the product creation process
  • Oversee the creation of rolling product roadmaps that differentiate Staples from competitors
  • Lead a team that collaborates with Product Development, Product Design and Business Development teams to executes new product development
  • Develop new product expertise in key categories that can grow Staples’ Own Brand product dominance
  • Communicate category strategies and new product roadmaps to key Staples stakeholders around the world

Lead customer centric research for future product creation:

  • Partner with internal capabilities and external research firms to understand the voice of the customer for products across office supplies
  • Partner with research resources to validate new product and package designs with customers
  • Manage resources that are focused on competitive threats and emerging market trends

Drive clear, consistent product branding and packaging strategy across Own Brand portfolio:

  • Maintain Brand stewardship of all Staples brand and other exclusive brand products in our portfolio
  • Define and develop new packaging systems for new and existing categories, as well as innovative products
  • Lead sub-brand development including name generation, trademark approval process, and logo generation
  • Develop and implement external brand / licensing strategies to deliver exclusive product branding solutions

Foster team and individual excellence:

  • Lead, coach and manage a team of high-performing Own Brand Product Managers
  • Focus on developing individual skills to enable superior results and strong relationships across the business
  • Build a pipeline of future leaders with a passion for products

Qualifications:
Basic

  • Bachelors Degree required, MBA preferred
  • Minimum 10 years in Consumer Products with any combination of Product Mgmt, Brand Mgmt, Strategy Consulting and/or Marketing

Christopher Durham

Christopher Durham is the president of My Private Brand and the co-founder of The Vertex Awards. He is a strategist, author, consultant and retailer who built brands at Delhaize-owned Food Lion, and lead strategy and brand development for Lowe’s Home Improvement. He has consulted with retailers around the world on their private brand portfolios including: Family Dollar, Petco, Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, Metro (Canada), TLW (Taiwan) and Hola (Taiwan).

Durham has published five definitive books on private brands, including his first book, Fifty2: The My Private Brand Project. In 2017, he will debut his newest book, Vanguard: Vintage Originals, a visual tour of innovation and disruption in private brand going back to the mid-1800’s.
Dynamic in his presentation while down to earth and frank in his opinions, he has presented at numerous conferences, including FUSE, The Dieline Conference, Packaging that Sells, Omnishopper and PLMA’a annual trade show in Chicago.

Durham lives in Charlotte, NC with his wife, Laraine, and two daughters, Olivia and Sarah.
