Director Package Design Private Label – Toys ‘R’ Us

Strategy execution

  • Execute business strategy in line with company ethics and operating procedures by demonstrating urgency, persistence and flawless execution
  • Set the direction for the department in conjunction with the strategy of Senior Vice President, holding the team accountable to achieve the business goals set and following through on individual and team commitments
  • Able to take part in steering committees to influence process change in the broader Product Development environment
  • Establish policies and procedures for the department as well as the Planning & Allocation division

Leadership /Talent Enhancement

  • Work effectively in the face of ambiguity, shifting priorities and demonstrating flexibility and resilience in response to constraints, mistakes and adversity
  • Use accurate analysis and exercises sound judgment to effectively solve problems
  • Act to address and resolve poor performance. Provides feedback, coaching and guidance where appropriate to enhance skill development
  • Shape roles and assignments in ways that leverage and develop individual and group capabilities
  • Identify and attract individuals with the capabilities needed by R Us and develops successors and talent pools to ensure availability of future talent
  • Create an environment in which people can clearly communicate and readily share needed information

Packaging and Design

  • Direct all aspects of the global packaging team and hands-on management of 10-person internal team, inclusive of Packaging Managers, Production Assistants and copywriters
  • Oversee processes for European Private Label Team and Hong Kong Graphics Team, although personnel do not report directly
  • Manage a $1.5 million packaging budget including agency fees and production costs
  • Ensure smooth operations by demonstrating critical decision making skills
  • Responsible for refreshing all existing major private label properties to better compete in the toy marketplace. Ensure that all designs can be easily adapted for use in our European market as 5-Language packaging, as well as our Canadian and Japanese regions
  • Manage the production of all US 2-Language packaging, including photography needs
  • Oversee the Hong Kong TRU Graphics Team responsible for selection, contract negotiation and general management of Hong Kong production studios
  • Minimum 10 years experience managing a design team
  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design
  • Advanced leadership and organizational and communication skills required
  • Expert skills in art direction and managing design direction with an international team
  • Expert skills in Logo and Package Design
  • Expert skills in Adobe Acrobat and FTP software including Fetch, Transmit or Cyberduck
  • Desirable to have Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and In Design skills
  • Advanced Microsoft application skills such as Word, Excel and intermediate skills in PowerPoint

Christopher Durham
Christopher Durham is the president of My Private Brand and the co-founder of The Vertex Awards. He is a strategist, author, consultant and retailer who built brands at Delhaize-owned Food Lion, and lead strategy and brand development for Lowe’s Home Improvement. He has consulted with retailers around the world on their private brand portfolios including: Family Dollar, Petco, Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, Metro (Canada), TLW (Taiwan) and Hola (Taiwan). Durham has published five definitive books on private brands, including his first book, Fifty2: The My Private Brand Project. In 2017, he will debut his newest book, Vanguard: Vintage Originals, a visual tour of innovation and disruption in private brand going back to the mid-1800’s. Dynamic in his presentation while down to earth and frank in his opinions, he has presented at numerous conferences, including FUSE, The Dieline Conference, Packaging that Sells, Omnishopper and PLMA’a annual trade show in Chicago. Durham lives in Charlotte, NC with his wife, Laraine, and two daughters, Olivia and Sarah.
